Social skills course for young people, 2010

The course consists of 7 x 1.5 hour sessions and is supported by organisations such the WBoP PHO.

This social skills course has been created to support children and youth experiencing difficulty socialising with peers and adults. The course is an educationally based programme designed to improve relationships with school mates, family, friends and significant others. It is aimed at youngsters who do not meet the criteria for other services such as those offered by Child and Adolescent Mental Health.

The small group size of up to 8 participants, provides a developmentally appropriate and nurturing learning environment. Youth are helped to understand, develop and secure social relationships through learning and practicing a range of social skills.

The first session is for parents only. It is imperative that parents attend this as evidence shows parental involvement is essential.

The course is interactive and progressive and as such it is important that each child to attend all of the other six sessions.

Please note that research confirms that the active support of parents/guardians during and after such courses is the key factor in determining the degree of success each youth achieves in developing their social skills.
